About me

From payments to clinical data: software that has to be right.

I am a full-stack engineer based in Apex, North Carolina, with more than ten years of building the parts of software that have to be right. Today I work independently on AI products, open-source software and consulting, and I am open to full-time and contract roles.

My story

I studied computer science at Central Michigan University, with a minor in mathematics, and spent my last two years there building web applications for university departments and tutoring other students in assembly, computer architecture, algorithms and Java. Moving several departments off paper forms was my first taste of what good software does for people.

Since then I have worked on the parts of software that have to be right: a rules engine for legal and compliance constraints at Dealertrack, real-time APIs for an iOS app at GameChanger, blockchain and fintech products at OpenCrowd, and, as a staff engineer at Routable, the bulk payment and enterprise approval systems that carried much of the company's growth. Most recently I built data infrastructure for health wearables at Meta.

Today I work independently. I am building AI products, publishing open-source software and taking on consulting work, and I am looking for my next role, full-time or contract, where I can own outcomes and work with a great team. I am based in Apex, North Carolina, and open to remote work.

Principles

How I work

  1. Own the outcome

I care about whether the thing works for the people using it, not just whether my part is done.

  2. Write it down

Short specifications, decision records and honest documentation, so the whole team can follow the thinking.

  3. Make it safe to change

Types, tests and automation are how a codebase stays pleasant to work in as it grows.

  4. Explain it plainly

Good engineers can tell a founder, a designer and a new teammate the same idea in three different ways.

Let us find out if we are a fit.
